The collected works of BKS Iyengar is called Astadala Yogamala and will be published in 8 volumes. It includes lectures, articles letters, and question and answers etc.
There are many standard texts for techniques of the asana and pranayama available, but the philosophical basis, insights and tips etc. are widely scattered. Therefore, Patxi Lizardi, Faeq Biria, Geetaji and John J Evans hatched up the idea of collecting, rationalising, amplifying, organising, and editing Guruji's miscellaneous works under his supervision. Two volumes have been published, one is ready for publication, and the next is in hand.
There is more information about the volumes published until now on our books page.
Guruji expressed the need to have more of John Evans' help in Pune to provide overall editorship for the project. He says that John has made a big contribution to the project. John provides clarity, consistency in the use of terminology, and ensures that the philosophical content hangs together as a coherent whole.
John is not a yoga teacher, and doesn't earn his living from yoga. The person who funded his visits to Pune to help with Light on Pranayama can no longer afford to do it. He welcomes help.
Can we the Yoga community fund John's trips to Pune for the future gain of us all, and as a legacy to future generations of yogis?
At the UK Iyengar Yoga Jubilee Convention May 2002 an appeal was launched to try to raise about GBP 4,000 to cover about four visits (John also works on the project remotely from his home in France).
The fund has two objectives - to publicise Astadala Yogamala and to fund John's future trips to Pune, when needed.
Guruji says "I think that they (students) are missing a great deal on the subject of yoga which they need to know as there is still opposition to yogic sciences and the volumes (Astadala Yogamala) give them a lot of clear ideas to work out for anyone. I think from that angle each and everyone should possess and read the volumes. I also hope that the money collected will make (it possible for) John to come to Pune if needed for further volumes."
