Adhomukha vrksasana Can't Post

I am very comfortable with Salamba Sarvangasana and Mayurasana. However, due to my head having a rugged shape, I have not tried Sirasasna yet(That is a shame).

I am interested in moving ahead with Pinca Mayurasana and Adhomukha Vrksasana. Will it be right if I go ahead or should I master Sirsasana before that?

It is generally held by the Iyengar community that one become proficient in Sarvangasana (held comfortably and with stability for about ten minutes without the support of a wall) before attempting Sirsasana, and then similarly proficicient in Sirsasana before attempting Adhomukha Vrksasana.

When doing Sirsasana it is recommended that one use a folded blanket under the head, this should alleviate any discomfort. This advice is also applicable for Sarvangasana where three blankets and a folded sticky mat are placed under the shoulders.

For a better understanding of these poses and the use of props you could refer to BKS Iyengar's book "The Path to Holistic Health." It may not be as complete as "Light on Yoga" but it is more in line with his current teachings and the use of props. You may want to consider seeking the help of an experienced Iyengar instructor, as they could view your poses and give you better advice.

Namaste,

Thanx for the reply

Is it advised that I should use a prop just for comfort sake? I am extremely comfortable with Salamba and Niralamba Sarvangasana postures.. I will follow your advice on Sirsasana. I am unfortunately not in a position to look for a teacher due to being om deputation in Noida. I dont know how long I will be here.

But I belong to Chennai and know that there is Iyengar Yoga mandiram in R A Puram. Can any one give me the complete address of the place? I will be grateful

Thank youSmile

If you belong to Chennai, you might consider learning from Dr.Krishna Raman http://www.drkrishnaraman.com. He is a student of Iyengar and runs a very successful workshop at Indira Nagar. Being a doctor of Internal Medicine, he brings a very scientific insigth into his teaching.

Dr.Krishna Raman is known to introduce Adhomukha Vrikshasana and Pincha Mayurasana to his students early on together with Sirasasana.
