Aerobic - Weight training and YOGA??? Can't Post

Hello

I do yoga - not often.

I usually go to gym for aerobic and cardio-vascular stuff.
and a bit of weight training.
==============

are they compatible with Yoga?

Any help and suggestions would be appreciated.

I think that yoga is very compatible with an aerobic and weight training workout. Yoga will help you become more aware of your body so that you improve your execution of the weight training excercises and aerobic ones. Also, it may bring a deeper awareness of yourself, rather than purely focusing on the body. Yoga helps the body, but ultimately it is about the mind.

I agree with jday. I would add that saying that yoga is compatible with aerobic training and weight training leaves a lot of room for error.

I mean, how specifically will you combine these things? Some who engage in intense workouts perceive yoga to be a way to relax or simply stretch. But some yoga sessions are thoroughly demanding. I would hate to see someone combine an aerobic session with weightlifting and then follow it up the same morning by going to an Iyengar style, level 1 yoga class. This would be a recipe for exhaustion and possible injury.

Thanks to both of you guys!

============

Actually I do not stretch much during the weekday workouts and I do yoga only once or twice a week. When I stretch that time, my body/ back is paining a lot.

Is that due to improper working out of different muscle groups without enough efforts toward relaxation?

Your comments and suggestions are welcome.

Subbu, here inside of the Internet (overstretched canals of virtual communication), it is difficult to determine why you have "body/back" pain during stretching. Please talk to a yoga teacher or trainer face-to-face about it.

When I first started yoga I was sore the next day after every session. I don't know if that was a bad thing, if it shows that I was pushing myself too much when really as a beginner I need to take it more slowy. Maybe that's a good question. Can you avoid "soreness" from stretching and when you first start yoga. I say that because I think there's soreness from stretching and pain from doing something wrong or doing it too much and injuring yourself. I've always thought of it as a point that you have to pass where you body has to adjust to regular stretching and strengthening, but now that I think of it, it's all relative to each person, and no matter how high your level is you can always go too far. That's the point with yoga, that it's a personal thing, working with the capabilities and limits of your own body.

That doesn't really answer your question (although I think it's relevant to it). But I would say that you areprobably pushing yourself too hard, especially if you're used to to aerobic and weight training where the aim is more about pushing and working as hard as you can. You shoud push yourself in yoga too, but not in the same way, because understanding your own body and knowing its capabilities is an important part of your practice. I also think that if your back is hurting then you should be careful because the back is a pretty sensitive/fragile and important part of the body. One of those things you really have to be careful with. My yoga teacher would tell you to back off a bit. I'm not an expert though, so maybe some other people on this forum can give you more specific advice. Hope that helps none the less,

Nadia.

Could anybody explain me why yoga should be connected with weight lifting or aerobics? After I started my yoga practise I've lost gradually my interest in other kinds of sports. They are simply so boring...

I agree, but obviously some people who do yoga don't, which is precisely why we are having this discussion. Why shouldn't yoga be used in conjunction with other sports if people like them? Perhaps other people don't feel that yoga satisfies every aspect of their exercise routine, like cardio vascular for example, who knows?

"Yoga" means "Union of Atmana and Brahman." The "aerobic heads" need some heavy training allright which of course they will construe to mean dumbells.

hi there Smile
i practice swimming almost every day at lunch time (in fact i replace lunch with 90 mn swimming) , and it doesnot raise any problems with my daily yoga training. thanks to yoga, i even began butterfly swim last year Blush; without the flexibilty due to backbend training, i would not even try to begin this swimming style (i am 46 Shocked); i will recommend this : if you parctice the same day yoga and workout (or aerobic) : do the yoga BEFORE ... (and it must end at least 1 hour before you begin sport); if not, you will find yoga a rather frustrating moment Crazy

Subbu,

I had this question to Guruji long back (20 yrs ago!) If I remeber the answer -
1. Ideally dont do it on the same day. It is OK if you do different things on different days
2. If at all you have to do it on same day, one should not follow another, sorry I do not remember which should not follow which

My question -
Why do you do cardio-vascular stuff etc - there is sufficient variation in yoga to give you strength and cardiovascular fitness (ropes for eg) in a more holistic manner.

This is the point - if you do weight training, in the long running you will harm your body, no doubts about it. Though yoga may not look direct, it will benefit you in the long run

Namaste

Surely your talking about Hatha Yoga Suhas which is of course only one minor form of all the Hindu Yogas. Speaking of benefiting "in the long run," the "long run" or the goal of all of Yoga is Kaivalya and not Abhinivasa.
