New... Choices... Never was told about props! Can't Post

As this is my first post, allow me a quick introduction...
Scott, living in Scotland, called Scottydog... Should be easy enough to remember.

Well, many years ago I borrowed from the library a paperback I'm sure must have been "Light on Yoga". I never had the insight at the time to take things any further, but now have a somewhat more modern looking version of my own, and am determined to realise it and myself.

After some light use of Google, I find myself bewildered by the variations of yoga, but am still drawn to the authority of BKS Iyengar, so will start the courses prescribed.

I didn't, however, see any use of props, apart from one bench, yet Iyengar yoga is described as being "prop-heavy". Perhaps you could shed some light on this?

Thank you.

I believe that the book Light on Yoga has not been substantially revised since it was first published several decades ago. That book does give a theoretical foundation for the practice of yoga, a very broad overview of the widest variety of postures, and basic instruction in pranayama. It is an excellent reference point for enthusiastic practitioners. However, the teaching of beginning students has evolved since the time the book was published. That evolution has developed the use of props, among other things. Later publications, especially by Iyengar's students and by Geeta Iyengar, show how to use many of the common props. See for example the book Yoga the Iyengar Way, by the Mehtas. The best thing to do if at all possible is to attend a class taught by an Iyengar instructor.

hi, highland yogi Smile
just a useful advice: be VERY Shocked careful about training alone...with or without props; yoga has a powerful action on your backbone : do you want to play with it? Crazy certainly not. So the best thing to do is to take lessons; even if you have just one lesson / month, then you can repeat what you just have learned with your teacher , this way you will make progress and stay... valid Wink .
