My wise teacher's reply on my question about good eating habits and diet was an ayuverda tip : eat normally, eat locally, but finish each of your meal with one fourth of your stomach empty.

You are very accurate in that assessment. I read some stats, sorry I don't recall who did the studies, which said that even intense power yoga only burns around 280 calories per hour. This was termed "mild aerobic excercise" or something to that effect, and was well below activities like jogging, swimming, or vigorous hiking in terms of weight loss calorie burn. That said, yoga is great for overall health, and I think that a healthy body will get to and stay at a healthy weight with much more ease! So, diet and preferably some sort of more vigorous aerobic excercise would be a good supplement.

Good luck!Cool

hello everyone,
This is very good information, but which type of yoga is best for a beginner? I am over 50 now and menopause has caused weight gain for me. I am trying pilates as a gentle way to get going, then I want to get into yoga as well. Since I have a bad knee, aerobic exercise has always been a problem for me. Thanks for any tips you can offer, I do want to lose some weight and be more fit!
