yoga & alcool Can't Post

i enjoy time to time a glass of wine (du bourgogne de préférence) Tongue, or a fresh beer. Well, in decent proportions Angelic, but some people say that it destroy all the work i could have done with yoga Shocked...What is your opinion about it? The funny thing is that many saddhus who practice a lot of yoga use to smoke (something else than cigarettes)...Smile

Come on, you're French! You can't give up your occasional glass of bourgogne! I'm sure some peoploe on this forum will tell you that it is bad, but I think it's like anything, it doesn't hurt in moderation. I think it's better for you than McDonalds or other fast foods. By the way, I have always wondered if there were many vegans in France. Since cheese and other animal products like fois gras are such a big part of French culture, does it make a difference to the amount of vegetarians or vegans there are in France?

bonjour, Nadia (or maybe bonne nuit ?) Smile
there is many vegans (vegetarians?) in france, and many people buy their food in bioshops in order to have the best natural food possible (even if it costs more Unsure); it is not for religious reasons mostly, but because they don't think that eating animals is good for health. personnaly, i don't eat a lot of meat; i like tofu for proteins with other vegetables; time to time i eat chicken, fish or beef, but i could avoid it completely without problem : i have been in a week of intensive yoga practice 2 years ago, we only had vegetarian food , and i did not even notice Sly. in fact, if someone eats meat,he has a tendancy to feel tired after due to the effort of digestion : lions sleep after eating, elephants don't Cool
i would like to try a crocodile steack Tongue (is it fish or meat ??)

Salut Smile

I have never actaully tried crocodile, however apparently it is somewhere between fish and chicken. I have, however tried emu, which is red meat; you wouldn't think that it comes from a bird. I kangarooo eat quite often. They recomment it as it's very lean and also not full of all the chemicals they use for other animals because it is culled in the wild and also not full of all the chemicals they use for other animals. It's also tastes fairly strong and gamey so it's nice marinated. You know when I was in France in a tiny village somewhere in the south they were selling "kangourou" at a butcher's. I was very surprised!

As for meat, I don't eat it all the time either, but I don't know if I could become a vegetarian. But after seeing "Supersize Me" yesterday I don't feel like anything much with meat in it at the moment!

Bon apetit Wink

I think to say that a glass of alcohol would destroy all your work in yoga is an extreme statement. It all depends to the level that you wish to persue the yogic path. If you are an intense practitioner you would avoid alcohol as it isn't sattvic (illimunative, pure, good) more belonging to the realm of tamas(darkness, ignorance).
I still drink alcohol but don't plan to for my entire life. Progressively I am persuing activities that are sattvic in nature. If I drink alcohol I won't engage in yogasanas and pranayama for the entire day. I find the presence of alcohol in my body dulling, and clouds the mind further. I feel as though having alcohol in the system whilst practicing yogasana-pranayama to be an insult to its intention; like entering a temple drunk.

Hi damien Smile
i agree with you on the fact that a drink day should not be a yoga day; but, i usually practice yoga in the morning, and if i drink a glass of wine (or beer), it is only in the evening; so, i would act with this glass as i act with swimming training : it is said that one should not practice sport the day of yoga, but if he has to, the best is to practice yoga before. as far as i practice yoga 6 days / week, i just enjoy a (liitle) glass of wine (good for health Blush ) with my dinner (the effect is different if you drink without eating). I think that if you follow precisely what one should do or not do to be a perfect yogi...you simply cannot live at all (some even say that sex is not good for a yogi Crazy ).
i know that yoga is also considered as a good training for alcool or cigarette addicts as part of their quest to get free of what has become for them a real drug. i still don't know why many saddhus in india smoke their herb (marijuana?)... maybe is it like those mushrooms for mexican indian tribes? to escape from real world more easily? i have seen that on magazines but without any explanation Unimpressed

I just remembered something I did once that probably wasn't very good for me... I went to unibar to see some friends before going to a yoga class. Alcohol effects me really quickly, especially if haven't eaten, so after one beer I felt a bit tipsy. Doing sun salutations after this probably wasn't the best idea... hmmm Crazy

My sugestion is always the same: if you enjoy wine and beer it will be very good for you to do yoga. Yoga is very healthy. And then, like wine and driving, try not to mix them!! Obviously: try good wine! By the way, I do yoga and I drink a couple of small glasses of wine at lunch, and then at night. I do yoga in the morning, and then a little more before dinner. I love both.

I do honestly think that people, who get too much into yoga and similar habits in for example our Nordic society, only do it to try to be different – perhaps because their current way of life doesn’t suit them or their Nordic society offers no alternatives. Nordic lifestyle is mainly divided into work, passion and alcohol.
