I am seeking to establish the approximate percentage of long term yoga teachers, particularly Iyenagar teachers, who have encountered major hip and knee damage after some 20 years or so. As far as I can establish it seems particularly prevalant in Australia and am personally aware of some. I have no ulterior motive in this but am interested as I am increasing feeling that inadequate attention is given to (a) to building up muscle strength prior to stretching. (b) the method's emphasis (in teacher training) on 'correct practice; and next to none on actually 'being taught to teach'. I am an ex Iyengar teacher, but have been for many years a Senior Yoga Australia teacher. I have Iyenger Certification (that I have been reliably informed is valid for life - but not use of the Iyenger name or logo - that I ceased doing around 1994). I have taken a recent interest in the Pilates approach - that appeares to recognise and avoid at least the former risk - and as I have no experience of it, cannot comment on the latter. I am interested in direct teacher responses. As I have no reason not to, I use my own name on this forum. Collyn
