Tips for Beginners Can't Post

Hello. I am new to yoga, but am planning to begin study at B.K.S. Iyengar Yoga School of San Francisco (http://www.yogaschool.com/).

I am looking for tips to help me get ready for that first day. For instance: does it matter when or what I eat before class? What should I do/not do to prepare myself? How many times per week should I expect to go? What differences can I expect between morning or evening classes?

Thanks in advance,
Jessica

You dont can eat before yoga, because this cause distortion on asana.
From your prepare,pratice always.
Every day you can pratice.
In the morning your body is very stiff;in the night is more flexible.

Hi, Jessica. Based on my experience and reading over the last few years, here is my opinion about your questions.

It's best not to eat for two or three hours prior to class. Yoga can be strenuous, and you may do postures that put you upside down. These things can interfere with digestion. Of course, a light meal takes less time to clear out of your stomach than a heavy meal.

What to eat or not to eat? Just eat healthy.

How to prepare yourself? Keep an open mind. There are some good, basic books about yoga, too. You might pick one up. I recommend *Living Yoga,* edited by Georg Feuerstein.

With regard to how often you go to class, and differences between morning and evening classes, you need to speak to the teachers at the place where you will study. They will advise you. In general, a person must judge for herself how much class-time is right for her. Go to some classes and see what it's like.

Good luck.

Hello Jessica
Morning or evening clasess? a totally personal preference.
In my case, I only practice/go to class in the mornings because I prefer to practice with an empty stomach; in the morning your body is stiff but your mind is baetifully alert. I tried evening classes but I didn't enjoy them, I felt totally exhausted after a full days' work!
I have found that I need at least 2 classes per week, and I practice 2 days at home.
Enjoy it!

I started with one evening class and no home practice now I do three classes and practice six out of seven days. Im not a morning person and stick to afternoon/evening practice - yoga is a totally personal thing. Go with whatever feels right!
