Re: Halasana [In reply to] Can't Post

Dear Narendra,

I have been wanting to respond to your question for awhile, but I have felt a little stumped.

Because you say "Please don't tell me to lift my hips," and you do not explain, I have to wonder what else you don't want to be told. Will my words fell upon deaf ears, as it were?

Do you not want to be told that it is better not to focus on getting into the full pose? The fruits of our practice (such as achieving the full pose) do not belong to us--we devote them to the higher power, who then distributes or holds them with infinite wisdom. If the full pose presents problems, we practice in intermediate stages. One way is to be in Halasana, but with the feet raised, as by resting them on a chair or on blocks.

Do you breathe through your nostrils in this posture? You pretty much have to do so. Do you have any sinus congestion or sinus drainage that prevents you from breathing through the nose?

I am most curious to hear what you have to say.

Yours,
BryanA

Narendra,

Don't be in such a rush to go to the floor. It sounds like Ardha Halasan should be your primary posture. I'd suggest practicing Ardha Halasan 5 days a week and Halasan one day a week.

Re: Halasana [In reply to] Can't Post

I also found this pose impossible to breathe in for a long time.I practise six days a week and attend three classes - most poses were doing well but I dreaded this!!
I went back to using support for my legs and found then I could concentrate on the alignment of the upper body. The problem is caused by the sagging of the shoulders and the angle your neck is at - in effect closing the space to breathe. With time and practice I mastered the upper body alignment and slowly lowered my legs to the floor (decreasing number of blocks). Holding at each level until I was comfortable to hold it - and able to breathe! Now Im comfortably on the floor.
For me it was nearly a year from returning to the chair to attaining the full pose and Im glad now I stuck at it. Hold in there you will get there!!!!
to repeat others - dont rush it
