To ensure your body is balanced, you should not concentrate on any particular poses, especially as a beginner. By doing the basic poses regularly, you should see an improvement.

Invest in a good book, see:

But try to get lessons from a good teacher (see the 'Dilemma of a Guru' thread). There are all kinds of ways things can go wrong, and a good teacher will show you safe ways to practice.

Best of luck!

I think you will get the most effect out of simply consciously attending to and correcting your posture as frequently as you can manage throughout the day without getting extremely sore. I have gotten alot of postural tools from yoga, but extending that awareness to everyday life is what really matters. Anyone who was ever in the US military knows good posture, even if they've let it slip. Imagine yourself as a soldier at attention: lengthen your spine - imagine a large invisible crane is pulling at the crown of your head (notice the hips and abdomen activate as you yeild to the pull) , pull those shoulder blades back (but not pinched together at the spine - too far)and down and practice holding them there and moving your arms while they stay. You should be able to make tremendous changes without a bit of yoga - by sheer intent and effort. Standing up straight is one of the pure simple joys of life!

thank you both for your help.
I have tried to achieve awareness via the techniques of F.M. Alexander but i think now i have to open up more and lengthen (as you said) more.
