50# weights Can't Post

I have just purchased 2 50# free weights and am using them on my legs in savasana and seated forward bends. This is something I have been advised by several teachers to do and finally I went out and got them. After using them in my practice tonight I can already feel a diffence in my hips. They are very hard to manage in the studio, and I fear that I may hurt myself trying to move them, I am trying to be very careful. Anyone out there have any experience with or tips to offer?

Some observations that may be too obvious:
1. Gang up on them. Have a friend ready to move them with four hands instead of two.
2. Store them on a sturdy table to minimize raising and lowering the weights to and from storage.
3. If you are in a hurry, do not try to move them alone.
4. Respect their being (though they do not appear to be alive). "Refrain from stealing" is sometimes interpreted to mean, "Do not take that which is not freely given."

Re: 50# weights [In reply to] Can't Post

erin,

I purchased two 20-pound sandbags yesterday. So I have 60 pounds altogether with the two 10-pound bags that I already have. I was working with them last night on my femurs in pranayama and again this morning in paschimottanasana. Anything that you can tell us after your year of experience with the 50-pound free weights? …and… Any comment about sandbag and free-weight differences?

Re: 50# weights [In reply to] Can't Post

I normally use one of my 50# weights for pranayama and savasana as illustrated in Light on Pranayama. I have found that they are so cumbersome that I am not inclined to use them as often as I should. I love the way they feel though. I am still worried when I work with them that I will hurt myself. I actually did smash my hand once.

I don't have any sandbags and the ones that I have used before were small and did not seem to do much. I would love to have some 20# ones. Did you make yours yourself or purchase them?

One of the yoga teachers here in Dallas makes sandbags. I just asked her to make me some that were 20-pounds.
