Backbend-Jammed back

Some of us suffer from a jammed back when doing backbends or even just lying flat on our backs. The jam results in a painful lower back. I asked Erin how she deals with this, and she replied as follows: Manouso Manos showed me this for urdhva danurasana: If you can come into the full pose do so and have someone stand over you and place their hands on your hip bones. Ask them to press straight down evenly - using their whole weight. This will instantly make space in your low back and relieve any jam. I used to get it real bad. This will teach you how to use your legs. For me it has a lot to do with my thigh bones flying up as they do in everything. I try to take the top of the thigh bone back into the hamstring from the groin, inner thighs rolling in. Don't grip your butt either. This is a big mistake as it gives your sacrum and tail bone nowhere to extend to - creating a jam. Of course the more you can get your upper back to move the less you will be prone to sacrifice the low back. |
