AIR Can't Post

Is it normal for my body to release air during certain poses? It's not gas, it's almost as though it's coming from my uterus or that general area! If anyone knows anything about this occurance, please tell me.

Re: AIR [In reply to] Can't Post

My girlfriend said she has experienced this during yoga and other exercise. She has read of it in books on women's health. She does not believe that it is dangerous or abnormal. Certain postures may actually be letting air in through the vaginal opening, and then subsequent postures push it back out.

Re: AIR [In reply to] Can't Post

This is normal for women who are not able to keep the pelvic floor lifted during inversions. (I am assuming these are the poses that you are struggling with since this has happend to me in the past.) I have learned how to control it pretty well although if my uterus is particularly heavy at the time it becomes more difficult. Some days it seems that there is no avoiding it. Keep practicing and with time I expect your muscles will become toned. You can see what it feels like to engage these muscles by stopping the flow of your urine in midstream. If this is difficult for you to do then you have a weakness in that area.

Thanks to you both. I really appreciate it - your replies were very helpful. I think it's something I can work on. More than anything, I'm relieved that it's not abnormal!

I am so glad you were brave enough to post this question. It is very embarrassing. I suffered for months thinking that there was something wrong with me until finally it came up at a workshop for women. I always try to tell all of my beginning female students about it when we practice inversions in class so that they don't have to go through what I did.

Well, I think it's wonderful that you discuss it with your students, Erin, because my teacher never has. It can be very embarassing and I was rather concerned about it too, since no one else seemed to have the problem in my class!

I read about someone using a tampon as a solution, but I'm not sure that's the way to go. Sounds good, but is it safe to wear one when not menstruating? I wonder...

Re: AIR [In reply to] Can't Post

Most women admit to having this problem when I bring it up in class and are reassured that they are not the only ones suffering. I had a student that said she would have to wear tampons to try to prevent it. I am not sure if it works. I don't recommend that anyone wear tampons, menstruating or not. Especially when there are safer and more environmentally friendly alternatives.
